Run AI on your Mac.
Know what to buy and what to run.
LocalAIModelOnMac answers three questions in plain English: which Mac to buy (new, refurbished, used or open-box), which open-weight model to run on it, and what all the jargon means — parameters, “active” parameters, 4-bit, GGUF, MLX.
Quick answer: which Mac runs which model?
The single number that matters most is memory (unified RAM). The model has to fit in it. Sizes below assume 4-bit versions, the standard way people run models on a Mac.
| Mac memory | Typical Macs | What runs comfortably | Example models | Typical cost (USD) | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 16GB | Base M6 Mac mini, base M5 MacBook Air, many used M1–M4 Macs | Small models up to roughly 8–12B parameters | Gemma 4 E4B / 12B, Qwen3.5 9B, Liquid LFM2.5 (1.2B–8B) | New $899–$1,299 Used ~$450–$800 | |
| 24–32GB | M6 Mac mini or M5 MacBook Air upgraded; M5 Pro MacBook Pro / Mac mini base (24GB) | Mid-size models around 24–35B, especially efficient MoE ones | Qwen3.8 27B, Gemma 4 26B A4B, LFM2.5-24B-A2B; Gemma 4 31B and Qwen3.6 35B-A3B at 32GB | New $1,099–$2,199 Refurb/used from ~$830 | |
| 48–64GB | M5 Pro Mac mini, M5 Max Mac Studio, used M1/M2 Max or M4 Pro | The same mid-size models at higher quality (8-bit) with long conversations, or two models at once | Qwen3.8 27B or Gemma 4 31B at 8-bit; coding models in the 30–80B MoE range | New $2,299–$3,499 Used ~$1,250–$2,700 | |
| 96–128GB | M5 Max Mac Studio 128GB, M5 Ultra 96GB, used M2 Max 96GB, M3/M4 Max 128GB, M1/M2 Ultra, M3 Ultra 96GB | Large MoE models around 100–125B total parameters | Qwen3.5 122B-A10B, Mistral Small 4, Llama 4 Scout, Qwen3.8-Flash-Next (compressed) | New $5,099–$5,499 Refurb/used ~$2,400–$4,900 | |
| 192–256GB | M5 Ultra Mac Studio 256GB (the only new option); used M2 Ultra 192GB, used/refurb M3 Ultra 256GB | Very large MoE models around 280–400B total | GLM-5.3-Flash and DeepSeek V4-Flash (4-bit at 256GB; ~3-bit at 192GB), Llama 4 Maverick (tight) | New from $9,499 Used ~$3,700–$5,950 (192GB), ~$6,700–$9,800 (256GB) | |
| 512GB | M5 Ultra Mac Studio 512GB (announced for late Oct 2026), rare used M3 Ultra 512GB | The biggest single-Mac models, tightly | GLM-5.3 (very tight), DeepSeek V4.1-Flash (aggressive compression) | New: price not listed yet Used: rare (one sale seen at $23,174) | |
| More than one Mac | Two or more Mac Studios linked over Thunderbolt 5 | Frontier-size open models | Meta Muse Spark Open (Meta says it’s optimized for two M5 Ultra Mac Studios) | Two 256GB M5 Ultra Studios: ~$19,000 new (2 | Two Ultra Studios: well over $15k | times; $9,499)
Rule of thumb, not a guarantee. macOS keeps part of the memory for itself, and long chats need extra room, so leave headroom. Details on the models page. Costs are US prices checked Oct 17, 2026: new = Apple list price; used/refurb = recent sold prices and asking prices from Swappa, eBay and price trackers. Three things to know before you start
1. Memory beats speed
A Mac with more RAM and an older chip often beats a newer Mac with less RAM for local AI. You can’t add memory later, so buy as much as your budget allows.
2. Big isn’t always better
Modern 27–35B models are surprisingly capable, and “mixture-of-experts” models run much faster than their size suggests.
3. Start with a free app
LM Studio or Ollama get you chatting with a local model in about ten minutes, no coding needed.
